Abstract

This monograph deals with the analysis of the work Iracema by José de Alencar, presenting a brief history of the role of women in the 19th and 20th centuries, highlighting comparisons with contemporary society. It will seek in parallel with modern society, visions and evolutions that the representation of women brought to the world, given this romanticization and adequacy placed in the work, in addition to the intimidation regarding the behavior and treatment that women have in contemporary life. Having this evolution in a historical character, it also brings the equality, differences and changes of the book and society, along with the vision established by the writer, where Alencar, being a man, placed in his literary words now more realistic conditions of India, woman, who falls in love with a white colonizer, resulting in a timeless romance. Its main objective is to identify the differences and similarities between the role of women in the 19th and 20th centuries with the contemporary, within an egalitarian and libertarian vision based on the book Iracema, by José de Alencar. The research is developed in an exploratory, qualitative and bibliographic way, developing content about the need to approach the theme, in order to clarify questions and add more knowledge at national level. The bibliographic review will consist of articles, books and websites published in recent years. The research is based on Azambuja (2003), Camilo (2007), Rodrigues (2015), authors who bring views on the role of women in society, in addition to the historical evolution of this perspective. And Martins (2016), who developed work on the life and profession of José de Alencar, in addition, of course, to the work Iracema, using edition 24 of 1991, from Ática publisher.
