Abstract

Over time, the witch has populated the popular imagination and still resides within it, being one of the representations of an unusual reality. Whether near or far from wickedness, the witch is a character that has been modernized, changing some of her characteristics to the point of becoming closely aligned with the nuances of a hero or heroine. Clad in the symbolism of the imagination, such as the hat and broomstick, the witch has been reinvented without losing her charm and, as a result, has become the subject of the present research, which focuses on the study of witch representations in "Circe: Sorceress. Witch: between the punishment of the gods and the love of men" by Madeline Miller. The research aims to answer the following question: how is the witch represented in the work "Circe: Sorceress. Witch: between the punishment of the gods and the love of men"? In light of this problem, the objective of the study is to analyze the characteristics of the witch Circe in comparison to other witches and protagonists in the narrative. To this end, a bibliographic research approach was chosen, based on studies with the same theme found in articles, books, and other scientific works. Authors who discuss the representation of witches in narratives and tales were consulted, including Bruno Bettelhein and Andréia Osório. Among the results, it is noteworthy that the witch Circe manages to subvert the traditionally presented concepts about witches, having a greater affinity with goodness and heroism, distancing herself from her literary archetype
