O bullying como força motriz: análise sociocrítica de sua representação e negligência na obra Os Treze Poequês de Jay Asher

Abstract

Bullying is a significant issue present in various social spheres, especially in schools, and its consequences have proven to be devastating for those involved. It is also observed, in some cases, that these harmful actions are not effectively addressed, or that there is a lack of reflection on them, consequently leading to numerous new cases and impunity. In this context, the aim was to analyze, from a sociocritical perspective, the representation and neglect of the bullying phenomenon in Jay Asher's work Thirteen Reasons Why. Specifically, to identify how bullying is portrayed in Jay Asher's work and how it is neglected. Additionally, to examine the consequences of poorly addressing bullying on the characters in the work and how it can affect the narrative, and ultimately to infer whether the treatment of bullying in reality influences fictional structure. To achieve this, a sociocritical analysis approach was employed, supported by a bibliographical review of key authors such as Candido (2006), Bakhtin (1997), among others. Silva (2010) is relevant for understanding the term bullying and its characteristics, as well as works by Fante and Pedra (2008) and others. Consequently, the work vividly highlights the devastating consequences of bullying and illustrates how neglecting this issue can further worsen the situation for victims. Therefore, it is concluded that the book Thirteen Reasons Why (2009) plays a significant role in addressing the theme of bullying, but it also presents gaps that deserve attention, an indifferent approach to the representation of the victim in the work, in addition to reinforcing negative stereotypes regarding the way to handle the issue.
