Abstact: The present study aims to analyze the socio-environmental impacts resulting from irregular
settlements in the flooded fields of the municipality of São Bento, Maranhão, located within
the Baixada Maranhense Environmental Protection Area, a site recognized under the Ramsar
Convention, seeking to understand how human presence and the disorderly use of land have
compromised environmental integrity and local quality of life; methodologically, a qualitative
approach with descriptive and exploratory characteristics was adopted, supported by a literature
review, field visits, photographic records, and the administration of questionnaires to residents
of the wetland areas, with data collection conducted in the neighborhoods of Alegre, Outra
Banda, and Porto Grande, followed by georeferencing of the sampled points; the results
indicated that a portion of respondents reported low income, limited schooling, and a lack of
land tenure documentation, factors that reflect socioeconomic vulnerability and contribute to
the expansion of settlements in environmentally sensitive areas, as well as the identification of
significant environmental impacts, including waste accumulation, water pollution, biodiversity
loss, and the proliferation of disease vectors, all exacerbated by insufficient sanitation services
and urban infrastructure; it is concluded that the irregular occupation of the flooded fields of
São Bento is a complex phenomenon that intertwines environmental degradation, social
exclusion, and the absence of urban planning, and that addressing this issue requires integrated
public policies that reconcile responsible land regularization, strengthened participatory
management, and the conservation of local ecosystems, ensuring a form of sustainable
development compatible with the socio-environmental realities of the Baixada Maranhense

Percepção dos impactos ambientais oriundos da agropecuária no povoado Ilha D’ Água, São Vicente Férrer – MA

Título: Percepção dos impactos ambientais oriundos da agropecuária no povoado Ilha D’ Água, São Vicente Férrer – MA
Abstact: Agriculture and livestock farming are among the main economic activities in Brazil and
represent essential sources of food, income, and subsistence, especially in rural communities.
However, the expansion of these activities, when carried out without proper management, has
caused significant environmental impacts, such as soil degradation, deforestation, and
contamination of water resources. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the perception of
local residents regarding the environmental impacts caused by livestock farming in the village
of Ilha D’Água, located in São Vicente Férrer – MA, considering the practices adopted and the
level of environmental awareness within the community. The research was descriptive, with a
qualitative and quantitative approach, based on questionnaires applied to ten rural producers.
The data analysis showed that agriculture is the main activity in the region and that part of the
producers still uses fire as a cleaning method, contributing to environmental degradation. Many
producers recognize environmental problems, such as burning and soil impoverishment, and
show concern for the conservation of natural resources. Although still limited, some already
adopt more sustainable practices, such as pasture management and controlled use of pesticides.
Therefore, it is concluded that understanding the perception of rural producers is essential to
guide environmental education and technical assistance actions that promote local
sustainability

Avaliação da qualidade de praças públicas no município de São Bento – MA

Título: Avaliação da qualidade de praças públicas no município de São Bento – MA
Abstact: Public squares play an essential role in the urban environment, serving as spaces for leisure,
social interaction, and the strengthening of community bonds. In small towns such as São
Bento, MA, these spaces gain even greater importance, as they often represent the main venue
for socialization. This study aimed to assess the condition of public squares in São Bento,
identifying their main structural and environmental issues. To this end, 11 squares in the
municipality were visited, with photographic documentation and the use of a checklist to
analyze variables such as vegetation, ground cover, cleanliness, lighting, maintenance, and
other categories. The results showed that although the squares fulfill their role as spaces for
recreation and social gatherings, they also face significant limitations. Issues observed included
inadequate lighting, deteriorated equipment, waste accumulation, and irregular maintenance,
along with insufficient tree cover to provide thermal comfort. These shortcomings diminish the
attractiveness of the squares and negatively affect users’ quality of life. The management of São
Bento’s public squares should therefore be treated as a priority, with planning directed toward
conservation, accessibility, and safety

Abstact: In recent years, the Velha Bárbara River, located in the urban perimeter of the municipality of
São Bento 3 MA, has been facing constant degradation due to the dynamics of the city, the
urbanization process and water pollution. This work aims to present the main environmental
impacts arising from anthropogenic activities and to promote environmental education
strategies among residents living on the banks of the Velha Bárbara River in the municipality
of São Bento Maranhão. To carry out the study, a questionnaire with seven (7) objective
questions was applied to 30 residents in the neighborhoods where the river passes, in addition
to two waste collections with a time interval of months between the dry season and the rainy
season in the region. Adding the material in the two collections carried out on the banks of the
river at Point 12, we have a total of 10.5 kg of solid waste, with a difference of 3.5 kg less in
the second collection compared to the first. The data obtained with the questionnaire indicated
that 100% of the residents near the Velha Bárbara River in the municipality of São Bento believe
that the main human activity that directly impacts the river is its use for waste accumulation
and that although garbage collection is carried out regularly on specific days of the week by
means of collection trucks, It has been reported that residents themselves contribute to the
pollution of the river by disposing of their waste directly into it, although 80% of residents are
aware of the environmental problems faced by the river, 20% claim to have little information
about the situation. Therefore, it is concluded that the absence of effective action by the public
inspection power favors the continuous degradation of the water bodies of São Bento -MA and
that the lack of constant and accessible environmental awareness and education actions prevents
future sustainable advances for the community
