Título: Mapeamento vetorial do uso e cobertura da terra na Fazenda Escola da UEMA Campus São Bento com dados coletados em campo e classificados segundo o padrão MapBiomas
Abstact: The use of geotechnologies has stood out as an important tool for environmental planning and management,

allowing the identification and monitoring of different forms of land use and land cover. In this context, the
present study aimed to map and characterize the land use and cover of the Fazenda Escola at the State
University of Maranhão (UEMA), São Bento Campus, located in the Baixada Maranhense Environmental
Protection Area. The research is characterized as descriptive, with a qualitative approach and exploratory
nature, based on a bibliographic survey, field data collection, and the application of geoprocessing tools.
The information was obtained with the aid of a GPS receiver and the OsmAnd application, and subsequently
processed in QGIS software for the preparation of thematic maps. The classification of the areas was based
on Collection 10 of the MapBiomas2024 Project. Seven classes were identified, with a predominance of
Forest Formation, followed by Flooded Field and Swampy Area, Other Non-Vegetated Areas, Other
Temporary Crops, Oil Palm, Other Perennial Crops, and Urbanized Area. The results demonstrate that the
Fazenda Escola reconciles academic activities and agricultural production with native vegetation areas,
highlighting the potential of geotechnologies to support conservation.

Abstact: The present study aims to analyze the socio-environmental impacts resulting from irregular
settlements in the flooded fields of the municipality of São Bento, Maranhão, located within
the Baixada Maranhense Environmental Protection Area, a site recognized under the Ramsar
Convention, seeking to understand how human presence and the disorderly use of land have
compromised environmental integrity and local quality of life; methodologically, a qualitative
approach with descriptive and exploratory characteristics was adopted, supported by a literature
review, field visits, photographic records, and the administration of questionnaires to residents
of the wetland areas, with data collection conducted in the neighborhoods of Alegre, Outra
Banda, and Porto Grande, followed by georeferencing of the sampled points; the results
indicated that a portion of respondents reported low income, limited schooling, and a lack of
land tenure documentation, factors that reflect socioeconomic vulnerability and contribute to
the expansion of settlements in environmentally sensitive areas, as well as the identification of
significant environmental impacts, including waste accumulation, water pollution, biodiversity
loss, and the proliferation of disease vectors, all exacerbated by insufficient sanitation services
and urban infrastructure; it is concluded that the irregular occupation of the flooded fields of
São Bento is a complex phenomenon that intertwines environmental degradation, social
exclusion, and the absence of urban planning, and that addressing this issue requires integrated
public policies that reconcile responsible land regularization, strengthened participatory
management, and the conservation of local ecosystems, ensuring a form of sustainable
development compatible with the socio-environmental realities of the Baixada Maranhense

Abstact: The floodplain fields of the Baixada Maranhense are ecosystems of high ecological
relevance; however, they have been undergoing changes due to unplanned urban
expansion. In the municipality of São Bento, Maranhão, particularly along the MA-310
highway, the occupation of ecologically sensitive areas has caused significant
environmental impacts. In this context, this study aimed to assess the environmental
impacts resulting from urbanization in the floodplain fields of São Bento (MA) through
the application of the Leopold Matrix. The methodology was based on a literature review,
field surveys, photographic records, and a systematic analysis of interactions between
anthropogenic activities and environmental components. The results indicated a
predominance of negative impacts of low to medium magnitude, especially related to
improvised landfilling, removal of native vegetation, soil impermeabilization, improper
solid waste disposal, discharge of domestic effluents, and open-air burning. These impacts
compromised natural hydrological dynamics, biodiversity, environmental quality, and
public health, in addition to promoting progressive landscape degradation. It is concluded
that the Leopold Matrix proved to be an effective instrument for identifying and ranking
environmental impacts, contributing as support for environmental planning and the
proposal of mitigation measures aimed at conserving floodplain fields and promoting
more sustainable urban development in the studied municipality

Abstact: The transformations in land use and land cover in the Maranhão Amazon, especially in the
Pericumã River Hydrographic Sub-basin, have caused intense environmental degradation
characterized by the reduction of native vegetation, erosive processes, silting, and loss of
ecological connectivity. These impacts stem primarily from the expansion of family farming
without sustainable management practices in a region marked by high ecological vulnerability
and increasing anthropic pressure. Between 1994 and 2024, this study integrated Remote
Sensing techniques, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and multitemporal analysis to
delimit the sub-basin, map land use classes, and validate the results through fieldwork at the
Santa Bárbara stream. The data reveal a significant conversion of natural areas into pastures,
temporary crops, and open surfaces, intensifying degradation processes and weakening water
environments. Although family farming is fundamental for local subsistence and
socioeconomic dynamics, its practice without conservation techniques increases environmental
vulnerability. Conversely, the study demonstrates that sustainable soil management, the
adoption of agroecological practices, and conservation strategies can recover degraded areas
and strengthen landscape resilience. The results offer relevant insights for territorial planning
and the formulation of public policies aimed at reconciling agricultural production, water
resource protection, and ecosystem conservation in the Pericumã River Hydrographic Subbasin.
