Abstact: Stingless bee honey has increasing socioeconomic and commercial relevance, especially in
regions where meliponiculture is traditional, such as Maranhão. However, the lack of specific
regulations for processing this product in the state compromises sanitary certification, quality
standardization, and market competitiveness. With the aim of contributing to a draft state
technical regulation on identity and quality for stingless bee honey, this study characterized the
physicochemical, microbiological, and melissopalynological parameters of 15 samples from the
five mesoregions of Maranhão and conducted a systematic review on the subject. The analyses
included indicators of maturity, purity, deterioration, and microbiological quality, compared to
limits established in regulatory standards of other Brazilian states. The results revealed
conformity in the parameters of maturity and purity, with adequate levels of moisture, water
activity, reducing sugars, diastase, ash, and insoluble solids, in addition to the consistent
presence of pollen grains associated with regional flowerings. On the other hand, non-
conformities were observed in the deterioration indicators, especially in the
hydroxymethylfurfural values, in addition to punctual deviations in pH, free acidity, and mold
and yeast counts, suggesting the influence of environmental conditions and processing practices.
The findings provide a technical basis for establishing physicochemical and microbiological
limits compatible with the productive reality of Maranhão. The proposed draft contributes to the
standardization

Abstact: The objective of this research was to characterize the socioeconomic and productive profile of
commercial poultry in the Island of Maranhão - MA and to report the sanitary episode of avian litter
intake by cattle, epidemiologically characterizing the sanitary situation and the sanitation measures
implemented. In order to reach the objectives of this study, 10 commercial broiler breeders
registered at the State Agency of Agricultural and Livestock Defense of the State of Maranhão were
interviewed through semi-structured questionnaires. E, used 119 cattle from a rural property located
in the municipality of São José de Ribamar - MA. As a basic research instrument (questionnaires) it
was possible to determine some characteristics of poultry farming, such as: profile of poultry
producers; characteristics of properties; performance of the activity; and, production, use and
marketing of aviary bed. With the results obtained in this study we observed a new organization of
the production chain of broilers in the study area. Thus, there is a producer with a differentiated
profile in the Island of Maranhão, characterized by production in partnership with integrating
companies and employment of hired labor, characterizing an industrial-type poultry; incorporation
of producers with larger land areas and greater bird housing capacity; and, the presence of technical
assistance that is reverted in improvement of the sanitary state and, consequently, in the indicators
of productive performance. As for the sanitary episode, this was the result of an anonymous
complaint about the supply of poultry litter as feed for cattle. After 72 hours of the complaint,
property inspection and collection of feed samples were carried out. The collected material was sent
to the National Agricultural Laboratory of Santa Catarina for the detection or not of by-products of
animal origin. In the initial inspection to the rural property was verified the presence of aviary bed
supplied to the cattle as food. And, the laboratory result was detected the presence of uncalcined
bones, non-hydrolyzed feathers and blood, which proves the feeding of the animals with byproducts of animal origin. The data obtained in this study show that commercial poultry farming in
the Island of Maranhão has great potential for expansion, mainly based on grain supply, climate,
favorable topography and good infrastructure. However, there is a need to establish incentive
measures for poultry farms focused on health education, taking into account the production, use and
commercialization of poultry litter and the risks arising from them in ruminant feeding. It is
suggested the intensification in the active inspections in ruminant rearing properties and the control
in the transit of the aviary bed that appears in the documentation the purpose of use of this byproduct.

Monitoramento de Salmonella spp. em granjas comerciais de frango de corte np estado do Maranhão

Título: Monitoramento de Salmonella spp. em granjas comerciais de frango de corte np estado do Maranhão
Abstact: In recent years, the increase in global chicken meat production has brought sanitary
challenges, such as the spread of microorganisms in intensive farming systems. In this
context, monitoring Salmonella spp. is crucial to ensure product quality, protect
consumer health, and strengthen Maranhão as a competitive poultry hub. This study
aimed to monitor Salmonella spp. in commercial broiler farms in the state of Maranhão
and to develop a sample collection manual to assist technical personnel in poultry
establishments. The analyses were carried out following the methodology established
by Ordinance No. 126, dated November 3, 1995, which sets standards for the
diagnosis of avian salmonellosis. The sampled farms were located in nine
municipalities within the state of Maranhão. During 2022 and 2023, 578 surface swab
samples were analyzed using boot swabs: 393 samples in 2022, with 12 positives
(3.1%), and 175 samples in 2023, with 9 positives (5.1%). The results confirm the
presence of Salmonella spp. in the farms, although the priority serovars targeted by
the National Poultry Health Program were not detected, indicating that biosecurity
measures have been effective. However, the increase in the positivity rate in 2023
underscores the need to intensify surveillance strategies and sanitary control practices.
The sample collection manual developed in this study, aligned with the guidelines of
the National Poultry Health Program, provides clear instructions to ensure the accuracy
and reliability of diagnoses. Training professionals in the sector, combined with
systematic monitoring, is essential to mitigate the risks associated with salmonellosis
and safeguard public health

Influência do teste Elisa sobre o diagnóstico de Mormo

Título: Influência do teste Elisa sobre o diagnóstico de Mormo
Abstact: Glanders is an infectious-contagious zoonosis caused by the bacterium Burkholderia mallei,
which mainly affects mules and donkeys in the acute phase and horses in the chronic phase,
and can occasionally affect small ruminants, felids and, accidentally, humans. This study
aimed to analyze the influence of the ELISA test on the increase in positive cases of Glanders
in horses in Brazil and Maranhão. The research used data from the Ministry of Agriculture and
Livestock (MAPA) and the State Agency for Agricultural Defense of Maranhão (AGED). The
results indicated a linear growth in the number of glanders cases in Brazil, with 29 cases in
2018, 74 in 2019, 287 in 2020, 207 in 2021, 221 in 2022, and 231 in 2023. During the years
2020 to 2023, in Maranhão, 438 animals were reactive by the ELISA test. In 2020, all
mesoregions in Maranhão, with the exception of the southern mesoregion, had confirmed
cases. In the following years, there was an expansion of cases to all five mesoregions of the
state, with emphasis on the northern region of the state. In 2023, the number of confirmed
cases reached 122, equivalent to the sum of the previous three years. It should be noted that, of
these 122, 43 were confirmed only by the ELISA test, as they occurred between the months of
August and December 2023, a period in which the Western Blotting (WB) confirmatory test
was not required to be performed, through MAPA Ordinance 593/2023. The study highlights
the greater sensitivity of ELISA compared to the Complement Fixation Test (TFC), especially
in the identification of chronic cases, and reinforces the need for effective epidemiological
control measures, such as biosafety practices and greater awareness of breeders. An
educational booklet was developed to disseminate information about glanders and its
prevention. It is concluded that Maranhão remains endemic for glanders, and it is essential to
strengthen diagnostic and control strategies to mitigate the spread of the disease
