Isolamento e identificação de Pythium Insidiosum em equinos na Baixada Maranhense

Título: Isolamento e identificação de Pythium Insidiosum em equinos na Baixada Maranhense
Abstact: Pythiosis is a granulomatous disease that primarily affects the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues in domestic animals, wildlife, and humans. The present study aimed to determine the occurrence of Pythium insidiosum infection in horses, using fungal culture, isolation, and phenotypic identification in horses from the Baixada
Maranhense region – MA and neighboring municipalities. Samples were collected from 23 horses showing clinical signs characteristic of pythiosis from the following municipalities in the Baixada Maranhense: Arari, Pedro do Rosário, Penalva, Pinheiro, São João Batista, São Vicente, and Viana, in addition to collections in nearby municipalities: Itapecuru-Mirim and Matões do Norte. The animals presented ulcerative
lesions with a granulomatous appearance, serosanguineous exudate, and the presence of small firm yellowish granules known as kunkers. Material was obtained through tissue biopsy or fragments of kunkers, stored in sterile universal collectors with caps containing 0.9% saline solution, and transported under refrigeration to the
Mycology Laboratory of UEMA. The samples were washed with antibiotic and 0.9% saline solution and inoculated onto Yeast Extract Agar, then incubated at 37ºC in an oven for two to five days. After the incubation period, seven samples presented colonies with a membranous appearance, smooth and slightly viscous texture, exhibiting a uniform cream coloration. The colonies displayed rapid growth, covering the surface of the culture medium with robust and well-defined mycelial development, forming slightly irregular and raised edges. Microscopically, the colonies revealed hyaline, aseptate or sparsely septate hyphae with a large diameter, sparsely separated, with branching at acute angles, irregular, and distinguished by the absence of transverse divisions—a typical characteristic of certain pathogenic organisms such as P. insidiosum. These results highlight the importance of early and accurate diagnosis for controlling pythiosis, a disease with a significant impact on animal health, especially in endemic regions such as the Baixada Maranhense. The identification and isolation of the pathogen in horses reinforce the need for continuous surveillance and management strategies that can mitigate the effects of this disease in affected animals

Erliquiose: Aspectos preditivos e análise de correspondência de casos em cães atendidos

Título: Erliquiose: Aspectos preditivos e análise de correspondência de casos em cães atendidos
Abstact: Canine ehrlichiosis is an infectious disease affecting dogs with a wide geographic distribution.
It is mainly caused by the bacterium Ehrlichia canis and transmitted by the tick Rhipicephalus
sanguineus. This hemoparasitosis is one of the most important in small animal clinics due to
its high prevalence, variety of clinical manifestations, and ability to cause significant
hematological alterations. The objective of this study was to examine the predictive factors
and the relationship between clinical, epidemiological, and laboratory variables in cases of
ehrlichiosis in dogs treated at a University Veterinary Hospital. This is a retrospective,
descriptive, and documentary study with a quantitative approach, based on the evaluation of
clinical records of dogs diagnosed with ehrlichiosis throughout the study period. Data
included information on age, sex, breed, origin, clinical symptoms, blood count alterations,
and results of complementary examinations of the dogs treated at a University Veterinary
Hospital. Correspondence analysis made it possible to identify links between certain clinical
manifestations and laboratory variations, helping to understand the epidemiological patterns
of the disease

Diagnóstico bioclimático para criação de ovinos no município de Amarante do Maranhão-MA

Título: Diagnóstico bioclimático para criação de ovinos no município de Amarante do Maranhão-MA
Abstact: Sheep farming in the Brazilian Northeast, especially with adapted breeds such as the Morada
Nova, is of great socioeconomic relevance; however, it faces limitations related to the hot and
humid climate characteristic of the region. This study aimed to create a bioclimatic diagnosis
of the municipality of Amarante do Maranhão (MA) for raising Morada Nova sheep by
analyzing annual meteorological data, including air temperature (TA), relative humidity (RH),
and thermal comfort indices such as the Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) and the Black
Globe Humidity Index (BGHI) to identify periods of thermal comfort and discomfort for the
animals. The results demonstrated that the first half of the year presents lower average TA and
high RH, while the second half concentrates the most critical conditions. This period shows a
gradual increase in TA, a sharp drop in RH, and a higher radiation load, especially between
September and November, when the THI and BGHI exceed comfort limits, indicating a
significant risk of thermal stress. These conditions directly affect feed intake, respiratory rate,
weight gain, reproductive efficiency, and animal welfare. It is concluded that the climate of
Amarante do Maranhão imposes relevant challenges on the production of Morada Nova sheep,
reinforcing the need for thermal management strategies, such as natural or artificial shading,
continuous water availability, adjustments to grazing schedules, and interventions that promote
a microclimate more suitable for the performance and sustainability of the activity

Caracterização da suinocultura da Grande Ilha do Amor

Título: Caracterização da suinocultura da Grande Ilha do Amor
Abstact: Pig farming has socioeconomic relevance for family agriculture; however, in the Grande
Ilha do Maranhão, the activity is still characterized by a low level of technification and
limited technical assistance. This study aimed to characterize pig farming in the Grande
Ilha do Maranhão, covering the municipalities of São Luís, São José de Ribamar, Paço
do Lumiar, and Raposa, analyzing socioeconomic, structural, productive, sanitary, and
marketing aspects. This is a descriptive and exploratory study with a qualitative and
quantitative approach, conducted between March and December 2025, involving 38 pig
farmers through the application of structured questionnaires and on-site observations. The
results showed a predominance of male producers (76.3%), aged between 36 and 55 years
(71%), with a low level of schooling and predominant use of family labor (84.2%). The
intensive production system was adopted by 100% of the producers, with predominance
of the complete production cycle (86.8%). Reproduction occurs exclusively through
natural mating, with absence of zootechnical control in 85.3% of the properties.
Regarding feeding management, 73.7% use only feed, and 81.6% produce their own feed,
with low adoption of phase-feeding diets. Biosecurity practices are limited, and 89.5% of
the producers do not receive technical assistance. Marketing occurs mostly in an informal
manner, with the sale of live animals to middlemen. It is concluded that pig farming in
the Grande Ilha do Maranhão has productive potential; however, it requires technical
assistance, modernization of management practices, and structuring of formal marketing
