Título: Uma avaliação refinada da população e ocupação de dois felinos ameaçados de extinção: o gato-tigre-do-norte (Leopardus tigrinus) e o gato-dos-campos (Leopardus colocola) nos cerrados do Brasil.
Abstact: The northern tiger cat (Leopardus tigrinus) is one of Brazil’s least studied felids, with no published population density estimates. A potential key conservation unit for the species is Mirador State Park (MSP) in NE Brazil, an area that also hosts humans and domestic dogs. Therefore, we assessed the park’s importance in terms of tiger cat conservation and whether domestic dogs present a threat to the survival of this species. We stablished 52 camera trap stations at three sites and monitored them for a total of 5,030 trap-days. We
calculated population densities using spatial and nonspatial methods and relative abundances in MSP and extrapolated these results to the other protected areas and corridor that comprise the northern portion of the Cerrado Biosphere Reserve. We conducted a population viability analysis for tiger cats in the park and assessed the potential impact of domestic dogs. The tiger cat density estimates were 0.12 and 0.25 individuals/km2 (nonspatial) and 0.087 and 0.11 individuals/km2 (spatial), whereas the relative abundances ranged from 0.124-2.168 individuals/100 trap-nights. The tiger cat population was estimated at 287 individuals, with 0% extinction probability within the next 100 and 1,000 years, but only in scenarios of mild to no disease outbreaks. Large outbreaks or habitat loss will be detrimental to species survival in the area. Domestic dogs were detected at 80% of the stations where tiger cats were observed. The threat of disease transmission by domestic dogs potentially impacts 65% of the park and seems to be the primary threat for the species there. The northern tiger cat population was estimated at approximately 700 individuals in the entire protected area of the northern savannas, which together with the additional corridor of the Cerrado Biosphere Reserve could yield up to 2,000-3,000 individuals. Our results provide the first published density estimates of tiger cats and confirm the potential threat of domestic dogs to this felid in Mirador, thereby confirming the park’s importance as a key area for tiger cat conservation and the need for 15 conservation actions. Given its density and abundance of tiger cats, as well as 50 its area size, compared to other locations in the northern savannas, MSP may be the most important site for the worldwide, long-term conservation of Leopardus tigrinus

Abstact: Family farming represents one of the fundamental pillars of food production and rural
development in Brazil, playing an essential role in food security, income generation, and
environmental sustainability. In the state of Maranhão, family farming stands out, being
responsible for a large part of the State's agricultural production. In this context, family agroindustries
emerge as a strategy for adding value to primary production, diversifying income
sources, and strengthening the local economy. The present study aimed to analyze the
challenges and opportunities related to the implementation, operation, and strengthening of
family agro-industries in the micro-region of the São Luís Urban Agglomeration. To achieve
this, the main obstacles were identified across the legal, financial, technical assistance, and
infrastructure dimensions; bureaucratic and sanitary barriers in accessing Inspection Services
(SIM, SIE, and SIF) were analyzed; and the quality of Technical Assistance and Rural
Extension (ATER) directed at these agro-industries was investigated. The research was
developed with a qualitative and descriptive approach, using primary and secondary data.
Semi-structured questionnaires were applied to 17 family agro-industries located in the
municipalities of São Luís, São José de Ribamar, and Paço do Lumiar. The results indicated
that most agro-industries operate individually and face significant difficulties related to
infrastructure, legal formalization, and access to credit and technical assistance. However, the
study also identified opportunities associated with institutional markets, the valorization of
local products, and the expansion of public policies aimed at family agro-industrialization. It
is concluded that the strengthening of these agro-industries requires overcoming the identified
bottlenecks and depends on the proposition of guidelines and the integration of credit, rural
extension, sanitary inspection, and organizational support policies, aiming at the construction
of a sustainable and territorialized rural development model

Condições de criação do suíno baixadeiro, animal localmente adaptado à microrregião da Baixada Maranhense

Título: Condições de criação do suíno baixadeiro, animal localmente adaptado à microrregião da Baixada Maranhense
Abstact: The Baixada Maranhense is a micro-region with unique geographical and biological
characteristics, standing out in the state of Maranhão for its seasonally flooded fields, and for
the presence of animals adapted to this environment. The pig known as “lowland”, is
endowed with great rusticity and adaptability to the conditions in which it is disposed, making
it an animal of easy handling, thus enabling its creation in an ultra-extensive way. In Baixada,
the creation of pigs is very present, serving as a source of income for many families, in
addition to serving, in some cases, only food for the breeders themselves and their families. In
view of this, the present study aimed to carry out a socioeconomic survey of swine farming in
two municipalities in the Baixada, São Bento and Bequimão, in order to observe more deeply
how the creation of this animal resource is carried out, taking into account factors such as
sanitary management and feed these animals, for example. During the development of the
research, visits were made to pig breeding retreats in the aforementioned municipalities, in
order to observe the reality surrounding the pig breeding activity. During the visits, a semiopen
questionnaire was applied, with the intention of evaluating how the swine activity is
carried out in the municipalities. There was a predominance of traditional, low-tech pig
farming, basically endowed with the application of common sense knowledge on how to carry
out animal husbandry. Therefore, the pig farming in the municipalities of São Bento and
Bequimão have several characteristics in common, each with its own particularities, but
which configure an extractive activity that is, for the most part, subsistence

Metodologias alternativas no ensino de técnicas cirúrgicas durante a pandemia do Covid-19

Título: Metodologias alternativas no ensino de técnicas cirúrgicas durante a pandemia do Covid-19
Abstact: The COVID-19 pandemic reshaped teaching-learning conditions, requiring students and
education professionals to make various adjustments. The development of methodologies
capable of replacing the traditional model of teaching surgical technique has become essential
so that the training of academics is not outdated and incomplete in a pandemic moment. The
work aimed to propose active teaching-learning methodologies in emergency remote teaching,
in the discipline of Surgical Techniques, of the Veterinary Medicine course at the State
University of Maranhão, evaluating their impact on the training of students. To evaluate the
methodology used, a quantitative survey was carried out, virtually, through the Google Forms
application, between april and july 2021. The results showed that the methodology applied in
this study was fully accepted by 69.2% and partially by 23.1% of the students, indicating a
good adaptation. Among the resources used in the discipline, the ones with the highest
percentage of appreciation were: the forwarding of videos with didactic demonstration of the
techniques presented (76.9%) and monitoring by the teacher via WhatsApp (96.2%); real-time
monitoring of patients (84.6%); training in maneuvers and techniques on cadavers (72.7%).
From the practices in the veterinary hospital, 50% of the students indicated they had greater
confidence in performing the techniques presented and, after training on cadavers, 63.6% of
the participants felt more skillful and confident in relation to the maneuvers presented. We
conclude that the emergency adaptation of the Surgical Techniques discipline allows students
to have adequate contact with the programmed contents, without loss in the execution of the
pedagogical project. It is possible to adapt the theoretical classes, in a virtual environment,
evaluations and practical classes with reduced occupancy and respecting the regulations
incited by the pandemic of COVID-19, so that learning would not be compromised with the
sudden change in the implemented methodology.
