Resumo: Brazilian literature adopted a Eurocentric model, causing an erasure of the contributions of African culture in Brazilian society, a way of keeping people of African descent passive in the face of a cruel reality to which they were subjected. Since colonial Brazil, there has been the hypersexualization of black women and the inferiorization of black men, thus, the stigmatization of black people has given rise to various racial prejudices that were able to survive the abolition of slavery. The present study was based on an analysis of the literary work A Balaiada: romance historical do tempo da Regência, by the author from Maranhão, Viriato Corrêa, focusing on the representation of black people and the portrayal of marginality present in the work, as well as the stereotypes created around this popular mass movement. The general objective: To analyze the construction of the race stereotype in the work.. In the literary analysis, the predominance of a discourse that inferiorized black men and sexualized black women was verified. In this context, against this negative construction of black identity, literature acts as a tool to combat racism; of strengthening the historical-social subject of black people.
