A literature review was conducted to examine individual and collective behaviors in response to the social issue presented in the book—namely, the suspension of death. The study analyzes the characters' behaviors and considers how such a scenario might play out in contemporary society, taking into account the social context at the time of the book's publication and the influence of Saramago’s ideology on his writing. It also draws upon Borges’s theory of influence, which posits that external factors shape literary creation—in this instance, how the book was conditioned by the social climate and the author's cultural background. The analysis focuses primarily on the characters' social reactions to the presented problem, viewing Saramago as a key figure in shaping the discourse surrounding the concept of eternal life. Furthermore, the study sought to demonstrate—through the implementation of this proposal—the importance of using popular proverbs to develop these skills. The proposal selected the popular proverb from among various existing genres for teaching reading, interpretation, and text production because it offers significant potential for Portuguese language instruction; it is easy to understand and rich in meanings that foster critical and social reflection. Moreover, proverbs possess multiple teachable dimensions—allowing for work on reading, interpretation, and writing—and consist of engaging, often humorous phrases that help cultivate a reading habit in students. To substantiate this proposal, the study drew upon key authors in the fields of textual genre studies (Marcuschi, 2005, 2008, 2010; Discini, 2010), popular proverbs (Arruda, 2012; Côrtes, 2008; Santos, 2011), and skills and competencies (Geraldi, 2006; Koch, 1997; Lima, 2002). During the implementation of the proposal, it became evident that the influence of new educational perspectives and practices must be highlighted—not merely as a topic of debate, but as a necessary practice for enabling individuals to reach their full potential as thinking, social beings. Understanding fanfiction as any writing in which fans use media narratives or cultural icons as inspiration to create their own texts, this study sought to investigate whether, in this process of creation and recreation, fanfiction can assist teachers in students' reading and writing procedures. To this end, we conducted bibliographical and qualitative research, using the assumptions of Indursky and Zinn (1985), Marcuschi (2010), Pietro (2016), Vargas (2005), Doneda (2016), Lopes-Rossi (2011), and Alves (2018). The data obtained through books, articles, theses, and other academic and scientific productions allowed us to conclude that fanfiction contributes significantly to the reading and writing process of students, awakening their creativity, interaction, and ability to relate texts to their experiences, producing meaningful knowledge. Initially, the context in which each author lived and the context of production of the stories are addressed, as well as the relationship between context and literature, and its nuances. Finally, analyses of the stories are presented, highlighting their distinct and similar aspects in narrative and theme, and the contextual intertextuality between them is also evidenced. This research is basic in nature, with a qualitative approach, based on theoretical studies by Candido (2011), Fiorin (2006), Bakhtin (2013), Culler (1999), Pesavento (2006), Bosi (2021), Moisés (2016), Lajolo (2019), Diogo (2022), Costa (2018), Martins (2005), Montello (2018), Duarte (2018), Borges (2010), among others.
