Cavalo Baixadeiro: aspectos históricos, situação atual e possíveis soluções para sua conservação

Título: Cavalo Baixadeiro: aspectos históricos, situação atual e possíveis soluções para sua conservação
Abstact: In the region of Baixada Maranhense, a type of native horse stands out, known by the local population as Baixadeiro, characterized by its ruggedness, strength for work, and also
endurance. The Baixadeiro horse is predominantly raised freely in the fields, extensively and
mainly feeding on native pasture. This study aimed to assess the Baixadeiro horse in its historical aspects, current situation, and possible solutions for its conservation and utilization. A bibliographic survey was conducted through scientific works, detailing relevant aspects related to the subject. The steps followed in the review included preliminary bibliographical identification, compilation of data obtained from reviewed researches, and manuscripts development. Since ancient times, horses have been prominent in the cultural and socioeconomic daily routine of human being. Locally adapted or naturalized breeds are animals from specific locations that exhibit their features resulting from the action of natural selection. The Baixadeiro is limited to the Baixada Maranhense region, constituting an important means of traction for the portion of the community that relies on subsistence agriculture and livestock.
It is characterized as a highly resilient animal to the adverse conditions of the region in which it lives. The breeding system of the Baixadeiro horse is presented as being ultra extensive/extensive. However, with artificial selection and indiscriminate crossbreeding with other breeds, the horse has begun to suffer from a decrease in its genetic diversity. Consanguinity or endogamy is also a problem that becomes increasingly present within the Baixadeiro population over the time. Awareness of the importance of this breed and the implementation of conservation measures are essential to ensure that future generations can appreciate and benefit from the presence of this iconic animal

Substrato e bio produto com Bacillus spp. no desenvolvimento de microverdes de alface

Título: Substrato e bio produto com Bacillus spp. no desenvolvimento de microverdes de alface
Abstact: Microgreens or "microgreens" are young and small vegetables harvested up to twenty-one
days after sowing, which have become popular due to the demand for healthy and nutritious
foods. With vibrant colors, rich flavors, and crisp textures, they offer nutritional benefits and
promote health, becoming an option to diversify urban food systems and increase social
resilience to climate change. Lettuce, specifically the American variety, is an example of a
suitable plant for this type of cultivation, and the use of growth-promoting substrates and
bacteria has proven to be a sustainable alternative to improve food production and quality.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different substrates and the application
of biocompost (biological product) to achieve high microgreen yields. The research
methodology used five types of substrates to grow microgreens: phenolic foam, carolina
soil, vermiculite, alternative babaçu substrate, and a mixture of carolina soil with babaçu
substrate. Tests were conducted with and without the use of the biological product Bio
Compost, containing Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis. The seeds were sown in
containers and exposed to RGB light to promote growth. After 14 days, the number of
commercial plants, germination, length, and fresh and dry mass of the plants were evaluated.
Among the studied substrates, carolina soil provided the best microgreen development, and
regarding the application of biofertilizer based on Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus
licheniformis, it promoted better aerial growth regardless of the substrate used. In
conclusion, this work shows that the use of the Carolina Soil substrate and the application of
biofertilizer based on Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis can achieve higher
commercial microgreen yields.

Título: Caracterização física, físico-química e atividade antioxidante (in vitro) da polpa dos frutos de buriti (Mauritia flexuosa L.) em diferentes sistemas ecofisiológicos
Abstact: The buritizeiro (Mauritia flexuosa L.) is a palm tree belonging to the botanical family Arecaceae. It is considered one of the most extensively removed palm trees from the natural environment by extractivism and occurs in a wide geographic area in the national territory, however, there are few studies regarding its post-harvest characteristics. In this sense, the present study aimed to characterize physically, physicochemically and determine the in vitro antioxidant activity, by the DPPH method, of buriti (Mauritia flexuosa L.) in different ecophysiological systems. The fruits were harvested at the complete maturation stage, and biometric analyzes were performed. Soon after, the fruits were sanitized, pulped and stored under refrigeration until freezing. Then the pulp was submitted to analysis of pH, Total Titratable Acidity (ATT), Total Soluble Solids and SST/ATT chemical ratio, moisture, ash, protein, lipids, vitamin C and antioxidant activity. The experimental design was completely randomized, with three treatments and six replications. Statistical analyzes for comparing treatment means were performed using the Tukey test at 5% probability. The correlation coefficient by the PEARSON method, performed using the statistical program AgroStat. Regarding the physical characteristics, the fruits of the Mirador ecophysiological system showed higher values than those analyzed in Paço do Lumiar and Icatu. The fruits of paço do lumiar showed better chemical qualities, as they were sweeter and less acidic than the fruits of Mirador and Icatu. While the ecophysiological system of Icatu showed greater potential for antioxidant activity

Abstact: The genus Leucochrysa McLachlan comprises a wide diversity of species found in various habitats, mainly throughout the Neotropical region. Despite numerous studies, difficulties in
the correct characterization of its representatives still persist, often limiting both basic and
applied bioecological research involving this group. The objective of this study was to redescribe the external morphology and internal genitalia of males and females of Leucochrysa
intermedia collected from secondary vegetation fragments. Chrysopidae sampling was conducted at study sites located in the Tico-Tico Settlement, in the rural area of the municipality of Miranda do Norte, Maranhão State, Brazil. Two vegetation types were selected: (i) old
secondary forests and (ii) young secondary forests. Five sampling areas were established within each study site. Lacewings were collected using attractive traps baited with sugarcane molasses. The specimens were properly stored, labeled according to the collection area, and transported to the Entomology Laboratory of the Center for Agricultural Sciences at the State University of Maranhão (UEMA). Species identification was performed using (a) dichotomous keys based on external morphological and genital characters, (b) images of Leucochrysa type specimens deposited in museums, and (c) original species descriptions available in the literature. For genitalia examination, the apical region of the abdomen of both males and females was removed and initially immersed in 10% KOH for clarification, followed by treatment with acid fuchsin to stain the sclerotized structures. The material was then preserved in liquid glycerin within
Eppendorf® tubes. Based on field collections, it was possible to identify and redescribe the lacewing species L. (N.) intermedia. The taxonomic characterization of L. (N.) intermedia,
based on external morphology combined with distinctive adult genitalia characters, contributes to the stabilization of the classification of the genus Leucochrysa and may support future phylogenetic studies. With the first records of L. (N.) intermedia in Maranhão, their known distribution range in Brazil has been considerably expanded
