Pesquisando o Maranhão colonial: manual de fontes manuscritas e paleografia

Título: Pesquisando o Maranhão colonial: manual de fontes manuscritas e paleografia
Abstact: Over time, many definitions have been applied to Paleography: an art, a discipline, a method, a technique, or a science. Its field is comprehensive and involves studies ranging from the evolution of writing, its characters, instruments and supports used, to its deciphering, reading and/or interpretation. Etymologically, paleography derives from the joining of two Greek words: palaios – which means ancient or primitive, and graphein – which means writing or script, resulting in ancient writing.

In this Manual, aimed primarily at future historians and researchers in related fields, we will address Paleography as a technical tool to aid in the critical interpretation of ancient manuscript documents. We also understand that Paleography is a science, since it involves specific procedures and methods, employed in a systematic and verifiable manner.

The product we are presenting here is the result of the thesis entitled "Pombaline Maranhão: Conflicts, Jurisdiction, and Authority in the Government of Joaquim de Melo e Póvoas (1761-1779)," which deals with the unfolding of conflicts observed in the relations between the governor and other royal agents – namely the auditor and the judge, as well as members of the local power, represented by the councilors. Particularly noteworthy among classic authors from Maranhão, the government of Melo e Póvoas is traditionally seen as the one that marks the beginning of the opulence and wealth of the captaincy, made possible not only by his actions, but also by the activities of the General Company of Commerce of Grão-Pará and Maranhão. Widely celebrated and praised in such works, the numerous conflicts that characterized the last years of his government were not addressed by the authors – a situation that contributed to a practically unanimous historical representation of him. Nephew of the influential Marquis of Pombal,
Melo e Póvoas faced a serious political crisis after his uncle's dismissal, which occurred
in 1777. The end of his government was marked by complaints and accusations, as well as the
progressive decrease in his authority.

Maranhão Pombalino: conflitos, jurisdição e autoridade no governo de Joaquim de Melo e Póvoas (1761-1779)

Título: Maranhão Pombalino: conflitos, jurisdição e autoridade no governo de Joaquim de Melo e Póvoas (1761-1779)
Abstact: Joaquim de Melo e Povoas governed Maranhao between 1761 and 1779, being the most
notorious and longest-serving colonial administrator of the 18th century. Widely celebrated in
Maranhao's memoir literature, his government is traditionally seen as marking the beginning of
the captaincy's opulence and wealth, made possible not only by his actions but also by the
operations of the Grao-Para and Maranhao General Trading Company. Our proposal, however,
is to focus on a little-known issue: the conflicts of jurisdiction and authority that marked not
only his actions but also triggered a significant political crisis in the final years of his
government. Methodologically, we used paleography to undertake a critical analysis of the
handwritten documentation produced in the sphere of political communication throughout his
government. This approach allows us to offer a counterpoint to previous studies, demonstrating
that Melo e Povoas was highly privileged by the position and influence of his uncle, the Marquis
of Pombal, resulting in a scenario where his actions were not challenged. The dismissal of
Pombal in Lisbon (1777), however, drastically changed political relations in Maranhao. As an
educational product, we chose to develop a handbook entitled "Researching Colonial
Maranhao: a handbook of Manuscript Sources and Paleography," aimed at undergraduate
students of History and related fields, with the aim of exploring and encouraging historical
research on colonial Maranhao involving the use of manuscript sources. To this end, we address
historical aspects of Latin Paleography; technical aspects of Archivology and document
classification; practical and normative aspects of paleographic transcription; and auxiliary tools.

Tempo e temporalidades na Idade Média: a Visão de Túndalo (séculos XIV-XV) no ensino de história medieval

Título: Tempo e temporalidades na Idade Média: a Visão de Túndalo (séculos XIV-XV) no ensino de história medieval
Abstact: The Vision of Tundale (14th-15th centuries) is a story of an imaginary journey to the Medieval Beyond which describes the experience of the knight Tundale who learned about the final destinies of souls in the after-death spaces, consisting of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. Based on the analysis of this narrative, this doctoral dissertation has as its object of study the medieval historical time with the objective of understanding the representations of the Christian temporalities of medieval society and their symbolic and imaginary reflections that built the Medieval Beyond. A Christian future time was projected and it was articulated with the dynamics of earthly life in the medieval period. The story of the knight Tundal presents the
temporal pluralities that, from the perspective of the Western Christian Church, was oriented towards the search for eternal salvation. The multiple meanings attributed to time in the Western Middle Ages are fundamental for the Teaching of History, especially for the understanding of the transformations and continuities of medieval times in a long-term perspective. Based on the theme of temporalities in the Middle Ages, the educational product, intended for Basic Education, consists of a time journey with the knight Tundale, who connects the Early Medieval, Medieval, and the Post-Medieval periods. The paradidactic entitled Tundale: on the trails of time aims to provide new meanings and reflections about medieval historical time, through the didactic applicability of the historical source The Vision of Tundale in the educational context.
