Título: Agroestratégias e as lutas pela (des)construção de imaginários sociais na região ecológica do babaçu
Abstact: This master's dissertation examines the agribusiness strategies and the struggles for
(de)construction of social imaginaries in the babaçu ecological region. Among the issues
discussed, the use of mass television by agribusiness to convince the general population
that agribusiness is the path to developing the country stands out. The study also analyzes
the intrinsic relationship between traditional communities and family farming, presenting
the perceptions of babaçu nut breaker women in the process of deconstructing
agribusiness strategies in the state of Maranhão. To this end, readings of the publications
of the narratives of babaçu nut breaker women from the New Social Cartography of the
Amazon project were carried out, as well as an interview with the president of FETAEMA
(Federation of Rural Workers, Farmers, and Family Farmers of the State of Maranhão).
Who has never been enchanted by the idyllic image of a smiling farmer, surrounded by a
happy family and exuberant nature? This idealized representation of agribusiness
permeates our daily lives, shaping our perception of the countryside and the food we
consume. But to what extent does this romanticized image reflect the complexity of
Brazilian agribusiness and its socio-environmental impacts? This research sought to
confront the conceptions of "development" constantly used in the discourse of the "agro
industry" with the perceptions of babaçu nut breaker women who face its effects on a
daily basis. By uncovering the advertising strategies that construct this narrative, the study
analyzes how commercials shape the opinions of not only consumers but also politicians,
farmers, and activists. It was found that the discursive construction of the "Agro, the
Wealth Industry of Brazil" campaign is based on the repetition of the message "agro is
pop, tech, it's everything," with the aim of naturalizing the association between
agribusiness and food security. This discursive strategy, by simplifying a complex issue,
contributes to the formation of a public opinion favorable to the agricultural sector, even
at the expense of a more critical analysis of its social and environmental implications.

Título: “Do barro vem, para o barro volta”: uso tradicional dos recursos e a luta de ceramistas por autonomia e direitos territoriais em Itamatatiua, Alcântara, Maranhão
Abstact: This research was conducted in the Itamatatiua community, municipality of Alcantara, in the
State of Maranhão (Brazil) and focused on the women that identify themselves as “potters” (ceramistas).
They practice clay drawing in the natural fields of the Baixada Maranhense without causing ecological
imbalance or environmental damage. For this purpose, these women organize themselves in associations
that are responsible for the extraction of lumber, as well as transportation of the trunk used to lift the
mast for the Saint Tereza festival. Through ethnographic work it was possible to note that such
conservationist practices of clay drawing provided the conditions for continuous reproduction of
different plant species in the fields. By accompanying the practices for “dish” (louças) making – which
is the designation given by women potters for artifacts and pieces they produce – it was possible to
understand that this artisanal activity is not disconnected to the struggle for land maintenance or for
territorial rights of that quilombola community. Along with the ethnographic description of the “dish
making” (feitura de louças) process I also tried to analyze the perspective of women potters before the
possibility for inviolability of their territory. Furthermore, I realized that these women are important
social agents who stand at the front line of an extermination project. These women manage to keep
standing the palm tree, the houses, the fields and the bodies of their sons and daughters, grandsons and
granddaughters, great-grandsons and great-granddaughters, nephews and nieces, godchildren, besides
households, as their networks of support and affection are not limited to blood ties and kinship.

Título: Mestre Irineu Serra - "O mestre de si próprio" - Trajetória, saberes e autonomia na Doutrina do Santo Daime
Abstact: This dissertation analyzes the social trajectory, knowledge systems (saberes), and
processes of autonomy construction of Raimundo Irineu Serra, Mestre Irineu, in the
foundation and consolidation of the Santo Daime doctrine. Starting from Mestre Irineu's
origin in Maranhão, as the grandson of enslaved people, and his displacement to Acre,
the research's central methodological approach employs reflexivity, given the
researcher's family belonging, and the concept of social trajectory (Bourdieu), as
opposed to a linear biography. The analytical focus shifts from a centrality on the
"beverage" (ayahuasca) to investigate orality and the hinários (hymnals) as the primary
technology for knowledge transmission ("oral school" / "the channels"), as well as the
community life in Alto Santo (collective farming, mutual aid) as a practice of material
and social autonomy. The research addresses the dispute for legitimacy as a central
axis, analyzing the confrontation between endogenous knowledge, codified in the
"Decreto de Serviço" (Service Decree), and the attempts at institutional-scientific
framing, such as CONAD resolutions and the "hallucinogen" category, understood as
"symbolic expropriation". It is concluded that Mestre Irineu's trajectory represents an
act of epistemic sovereignty, founding an autonomous social field—with its own legal,
pedagogical, and cosmological systems—and affirming himself, in practice, as the
"master of himself" (mestre de si próprio), whose legacy is expressed in cultural
resistance and the organization of a coherent form of existence.
